Name of the plant finds its roots in Greek word kalunei  that is translated as to clean; name of calluna having ancient Slavic origin was formed from word varesnets that means hoarfrost. 
Calluna symbolizes endurance. It is connected with a fact that this flower is able survive in a place where no other flower can. Calluna is able grown even on windswept sides of hills. White calluna symbolizes hope, lilac-coloured calluna is a symbol of admiration.

Writers often use image of calluna in their works! Beds of lilac-coloured calluna are mentioned in novel of Alexandre Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo and Dead Souls of Nikolai Gogol, in poem Peer Gynt written by Henrik Ibsen and in novel The Hound of the Baskervilles of Arthur Conan Doyleand, and novel Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Brontë.
Ballad of Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson Heather Honey includes a wonderful description of Celtic calluna drink. 
Calluna was populised in the ХVIII century in England, later it became popular in Holland and Belgium. World’s largest collection – 300 species of calluna – is in Germany in Bad Zwischenahn town. 
Calluna is the national flower of Norway. 
In Scotland calluna holds a special place of honour.  Its leaves were used to produce a yellow dye for well-known tartan applied for traditional Scottish plaids and kilts. Calluna was also used for heather ale — traditional Scottish barley wine, first mentions of which are dated to the II century AD. An emblem of one of Scottish clans also includes calluna.
An old Scottish legend tells that modest calluna was the only plant that agreed to grow on bare, windswept sides of hills at God’s request. Therefore it was rewarded with simplicity, high endurance, and natural charm, as well as a gorgeous fragrance and excellent melliferous qualities.
Calluna is rightly considered to be the symbol of endurance.
